Taking a Walk Down Memory Lane
As my college experience draws to a close, I can’t help but feel scared about what’s going to happen in the future. When the year 2020 hit and COVID-19 became a worldwide pandemic, I felt alone and longing to go back to the times where things made more sense to me and my still-developing brain. Even though my adult self tells me to grow up, I want to heal my inner child and give it a huge gift by going through my childhood memories and escaping all the present trauma. Each work in this series symbolizes some memories that stuck to me growing up. Personal memories include decorating my room and watching holiday specials every fall and winter, watching my favorite shows and movies that influence me to be the person that I am today, and more. I choose to work in materials I used growing up, such as acrylic paints, crayons, and paper (construction, notebook, etc.). I loved coloring with crayons and drawing on notebook paper in classes. In college, I learned to experiment with different types of materials in my art classes. Sometimes, even now, I watch children’s shows to bring a sense of calm and age regression. Some of the shows I watch (such as Charlie and Lola and Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood) use collage for their characters and backgrounds, and I find that to be intriguing.
